Shower Faults That Need a Plumber

Three faults fill most of our shower jobs: a drip that outlasts the taps being shut, water that never gets properly hot, and a spray that has lost its punch. Each fault names a different component, so the diagnosis matters more than the guess.

What we check:

  1. A drip that won't quit

water sneaking past a worn seal inside the mixer, not a head fault. A short dribble just after you shut the shower off is normal.

  2. Lukewarm water

a tired cartridge dragging extra cold into the mix. If no hot tap in the home works, the hot water unit is to blame, and our hot water plumbing page covers that.

  3. A weak or patchy spray

limescale choking the spray holes, a restrictor seated in the head, or a cartridge nearing the end of its life.

  4. A weep at the join

water showing where the head meets the arm during a shower points to a loose thread or a spent seal there.

  5. Both outlets running

where a bath spout shares the wall, a worn diverter sends water to the spout and the shower at once.

Our dripping shower head guide explains the difference between leftover water and a failing part.

Heads, Arms, Rails and Mixers Explained

A shower breaks into five parts from the spray end back to the wall: the head, the arm or the rail, the hose, the wall mixer and the diverter. Here's what each one does:

  1. Shower head

the spray outlet. It screws onto the arm or hangs from the rail, and it's the one part you may replace yourself.

  2. Shower arm

delivers water from the wall pipe to a fixed head.

  3. Rail and hose

a rail holds a handheld head at your chosen height, fed by a hose from the wall outlet.

  4. Mixer and cartridge

the mixer blends hot and cold and sets the flow, and the cartridge inside it is the valve doing that work. Most shower mixer repair jobs come down to matching and swapping that cartridge.

  5. Diverter

the switch that sends water to the shower or the bath spout on a combined unit.

The head, arm and rail sit in reach without opening the wall. An in-wall mixer needs tiles or an access panel lifted first, so we name the fault before anything gets cut.

Can You Fix a Shower Yourself in Queensland

Yes, anyone may fit a replacement shower head at home, but the arm, the wall mixer and the cartridge need a licensed plumber. The QBCC lists a head swap as unregulated work, and the standard still applies to the finished result.

Everything past the head is regulated. Fixing, swapping or removing a fitting counts as minor work: a licence is required, with no permit and no paperwork for the QBCC.

Putting in an extra shower outlet, or moving the shower elsewhere in the room, is notifiable work in an existing home. Council permission isn't needed, and we lodge a Form 4 with the QBCC no more than 10 business days after completion. The lodgement fee is ours to pay, and the cost, including admin, can be passed to you.

When a Shower Repair Becomes a Replacement

Replace rather than repair when the failing part can't be rescued by new internals, or when the plan adds or moves an outlet. A cracked arm, a discontinued mixer or a full bathroom refresh all tip the job the same way.

Two marks govern a new shower fitting. WaterMark is the product certification a licensed plumber can legally install, and the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme rates it for efficiency.

The rules on top:

  • A brand-new dwelling requires a showerhead rated at 3 stars minimum under WELS; renovations are exempt.
  • In a Queensland rental, the showerhead has to be capped at 9 litres per minute before a landlord can pass the entire water account to the tenant.
  • Look for 3 stars or more on fixtures produced from 2005 on; that's the Residential Tenancies Authority's advice.

Planning a full refresh? Our bathroom renovation plumbing page maps the pipework side, and vanity and basin installation covers the basin that usually follows the shower into the skip. Our bathroom plumbing page lists every wet-area job we take on.

Showers in Older Brick Bathrooms

The last census counted 96.8 per cent of homes here as detached houses, and the bulk went up across the suburb's 1960s-to-2000s build eras. Many of those bathrooms still run their original in-wall mixers, so a cartridge match can mean hunting a part the maker retired long ago.

Local Bray Park Plumbing plans for that before any tile comes off, from a quick cartridge swap to a whole mixer replacement. Families near Holy Spirit School call us for both, usually when a morning shower tips from annoying to unusable.

Questions We Get About Showers

Call (07) 3524 7163

Can a plumber fix my shower in Bray Park?

Yes, we repair every fitting: head, arm, rail, hose and the mixer with its cartridge inside. Water getting past the shower recess into walls or floors is a separate job with its own licence class, and we don't take those on.

What causes low shower pressure in my bathroom?

Limescale over the spray openings, a built-in restrictor or a tired cartridge are the usual fitting-side culprits. When every tap in the house runs weak, the supply side is at fault and needs its own diagnosis.

Do I need a plumber to install a new shower?

Yes, installing a fresh outlet or shifting the shower counts as notifiable work. A licensed plumber does it, council permission isn't needed, and the Form 4 reaches the QBCC within 10 business days of finishing.

Does a shower mixer swap need a Form 4?

No, swapping a mixer for another of the same kind is minor work, so no form is lodged. Adding an outlet or relocating the shower makes it notifiable work, and that does need a Form 4.

Who fixes a shower mixer in a Bray Park unit?

The lot owner, in most cases. Pipes serving a single lot and inside its boundary belong to that owner, and a shower tray stays with the lot owner or occupier even when the tray lies beyond the lot's boundary.
